This three credit hour † CE course presented by 3 authors focuses on different aspects of low vision driving:

1) Clinical Evaluation and Management of the Low Vision Driver
2) Driving with Low Vision and Compensatory strategies
3) Driving with Impaired Vision and Visual Field Limitations

The first lecture series is authored by Judith E. Goldstein, O.D., Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the Wilmer Eye Institute at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. This lecture series provides information on the clinical examination of patients with low vision who wish to gain and/or maintain a driver's license. The clinician's role in management of the low vision driver is emphasized.

The second lecture series is authored by Herb Simon. Mr. Simon is a Certified Driving Instructor and Professional Consultant with over 40 years of driver education experience. Mr. Simon's first lecture describes the challenges faced by individuals who wish to gain and/or maintain a driver's license as well as the safety issues involved with low vision and motor vehicle operation. The second lecture demonstrates real-life examples of compensatory skills for the low vision driver through the use of photos.

The third and final lecture series is authored by Eli Peli, M.Sc., O.D., Professor of Ophthalmology and Moakley Scholar in Aging Eye Research at the Schepens Eye Research Institute of Harvard University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Peli's lecture on Driving with Impaired Vision discusses the variation in state regulations and requirements for drivers with visual impairment in the United States.

In his final lecture, Dr. Peli provides an overview of the impact that restrictions in visual field have on the low vision driver.

Grading:
Successful completion of the course requires a score of 70% or better and the completion of the course evaluation. Students will receive a certificate of completion once those two requirements are met. The course is designed as a self-paced personal enrichment continuing education program. Lectures may be repeated until material is mastered.
